For many years Miami City Hall has been infiltrated by special interest groups composed primarily of developers and their lobbyists. These special interests get their way because of the legal bribery known as campaign contributions. Campaign contributions are a cancer at the core of our democracy.
Jim Fried will sponsor a charter amendment to reform campaign contributions. The charter initiative would prevent commission candidates from accepting campaign contributions from developers or any person or business entity that does business with the city or any of its agencies. Miami Beach already has such legislation, which has worked well, and Miami should emulate it.
